1950s Sci-fi-Inspired shoot-’em-up ‘Squad 51 vs. The Flying Saucers’ Arrives for Nintendo Switch

“Squad 51 vs. The Flying Saucers,” the 1950s sci-fi-inspired, fast-paced 2D shooter, which debuted on PC last year, has arrived for the Nintendo Switch.

From Assemble Entertainment, publishing partner WhisperGames, Brazilian film company Fehorama Filmes, and developer Loomiarts, “Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers” takes place after extraterrestrials from outer space arrive on earth, bringing promises of a bright new future for its people. However, this otherworldly partnership soon reveals a darker side as the VEGA Corporation, the alien enterprise led by the hideous Director Zarog, imposes its predatory politics on the human race. Amid this oppression, the rebel group Squad 51 rises up to take on Zarog’s diabolic fleet of flying saucers.

Players choose from four unique aircraft that can be customized with special weapons for this classic shoot-’em up gameplay that features black-and-white aesthetics, live-action FMV sequences, and dubbed voices that tell the story of the battle between Squad 51 and Director Zarog’s alien fleet.

The game’s battles occur in 11 different environments, including snowy mountains, forests, cityscapes, and more. The game supports dynamic difficulty, allowing rookie pilots and veteran aces alike to fully enjoy their assault on the aliens. Don’t want to go it alone? A second player can enter a level at any time — earn points with a co-op player and unlock new special weapons and upgrades together.

“Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers” is out today for Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo Store for a temporarily discounted price of $13.99. The PC version is also available via Steam for $19.99 and will follow on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
