Since 1992, MTV has been handing out buckets of golden popcorn to recognize the best in movies, and as of 2017 television. The nominees are chosen by the show’s producers and executives, but the winners are determined by us, the general public. Voting for this years awards kicked off yesterday, and horror is represented in six of the 16 categories. Here are all the nominations from the horror genre that you can support!
Best Movie
Jordan Peele’s Us has been nominated in the “Best Movie” category and faces some stiff competition against films Avengers: Endgame, BlacKkKlansman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Best Show
Somehow Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina didn’t make the cut, but last years The Haunting of Hill House did. The Netflix haunted house series, which is set to release a new chapter next year, is facing off against shows “Big Mouth,” “Game of Thrones,” “Riverdale,” and “Schitt’s Creek.”
Best Performance in a Movie
Horror gets two nods in the category of best movie performance with nominees Lupita Nyong’o in Us and Sandra Bullock in Bird Box. Both performances were incredible, but I think Nyong’o has my vote, after all, she actually played two roles in her film.
Best Performance in a Show
While my favorite teenage witch got snubbed in the best show category, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka was nominated for “Best Performance in a Show.” Shipka faces off in this category against Elisabeth Moss in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Emilia Clarke in “Game of Thrones,” Gina Rodriguez in “Jane the Virgin,” and Jason Mitchell in “The Chi.”
Best Villain
Lupita Nyong’o earned a second nomination in this year’s award show for her character “Red” in the movie Us. Nyong’o is up against Jodie Comer for her role as Villanelle in “Killing Eve,” Joseph Fiennes for his role as Commander Red Waterford in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Josh Brolin as Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, and Penn Badgley for his performance as Joe Goldberg in “You.”
Most Frightened Performance
A category all our own, the “Most Frightened Performance” category pits Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Linda Cardellini (The Curse of La Llorona), Rhian Rees (Halloween), Sandra Bullock (Bird Box), and Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Hill House) against one another to determine who brought the most fear to screens big and small.
