It’s been two years since we first learned that an animated prequel series to the 1984 film “Gremlins” was in the works, for what at the time was an unnamed streaming service from WarnerMedia. We now know that streaming service to be HBO Max, and today they unveiled a teaser highlighting all of the new content coming to the platform in 2022. Among that content is the animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.”
In the two-minute sizzle reel of 2022 content, HBO Max gave us a quick glimpse of the beloved Mogwai Gizmo. In it, we see the Mogwai running atop a bamboo cage as it rolls away under his feet.
The new animated series will take viewers back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
An exact release date for the series has not been announced, but we at least now know that the “Gremlins” animated series will debut sometime next year. You can check out the full 2022 HBO Max teaser, which includes the quick glimpse of Gizmo, below:
