Next month, The Haunted Mansion turns 50. The original Disneyland attraction opened on August 9, 1969, and with its anniversary in the spotlight, a free Haunted Mansion inspired game you can print out and play has resurfaced online thanks to The A.V. Club.
Originally released in 2008, “Escape from the Haunted Mansion,” is an original board game created by the fan website The Disney Experience. The massive 3D papercraft game is 100% free, but in order to play it you’ll have to print and assemble the game yourself.
While it may sound like an easy feat, I can’t stress enough the scale of this game. Once built the game stands roughly 16-inches high and is nearly two-feet wide, and it doesn’t break down like a game you buy at the store. It’s made from over 197 full-color parts that require nearly 60 sheets of paper to print.
The printable game includes game board, five playing pieces, “Fortune Cards,” which feature spells from Madame Leota that can help or hinder your escape, a 13-hour clock, a pair of paper dice and two sets of instructions. In “Escape from the Haunted Mansion” you and up to four friends roll the dice in order to make your way through the Haunted Mansion, winding your way through haunted corridors and the ghost-filled cemetery. But watch out, because along the way you might run into a spell or two cast by Madame Leota that may or may not work in your favor. Escape before the clock strikes 13, or you’ll join the 999 happy haunts who have retired at the mansion.
While its a rather large project, the end product is actually quite gorgeous. Both the mansion interiors and exteriors are highly detailed and feature a number of familiar faces from the classic Disneyland attraction. Even if you didn’t play the game, it could make for an impressive Haunted Mansion display. The below are a handful of images of the game interiors.
A dedicated Haunted Mansion could really make this thing look incredible by mixing paper types and leveraging the latest printing technology. For a detailed overview from a fan who built the game back in 2013, check out the video below:
If you want to take a stab at making this game yourself, you can download everything you need here. And if you actually complete it, take a photo of it and share it with me on social media. I’d love to see a current build of this!
