A24 has debuted a new book from special effects makeup artist Emily Schubert titled “Beauty of the Beast” in its online shop. The 180-page book is based on Schubert’s years of experience in the film industry, where she’s done makeup and prosthetics on movies like “The Sweet East” and “Good Time,” and offers a crash course in SFX makeup.
The book features foundational information like skin preparation, facial massage, and color theory, as well as a primer on essential skills, including how to cover a pimple, how to cover eyebrows, remove a tattoo, and more.
On the SFX makeup front, the book offers step-by-step instructions for recreating key looks, including “Alive,” “Dead,” “Young,” “Bald,” “Hairy,” “Bony,” and “Bloody.” As a bonus, the book includes a fold-out, illustrated toolkit detailing everything you need to be an SFX makeup artist.
