On Thursday, as part of the “Alan Wake” anniversary update, Remedy Entertainment Creative Director Sam Lake announced that a television series inspired by the game was in development.
According to Lake, AMC has purchased the rights to “Alan Wake” and is collaborating with the developers to create a television series based on the game. “AMC, the wonderful, wonderful home for absolutely brilliant TV shows, has bought the rights for Alan Wake,” said Lake. “We have been collaborating on making a TV show happen. Nothing more to share at the moment, but we will certainly let you know when there is something to announce.”
As Lake points out early in the video, talks of an “Alan Wake” television series have circulated for years. The Creative Director jokes, “Sometimes making video games takes a long while, well, it kind of turns out that now and again making a TV show can take even longer.”
“Alan Wake” was first released on the Xbox 360 and PC in 2010. In it, players play as Alan Wake, a troubled author who embarks on a desperate search for his missing wife. Following her mysterious disappearance from the Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls, he discovers pages of a horror story he has supposedly written but he has no memory of. Armed with only a flashlight and a gun, Wake sets out to find answers, but as more pages surface, his sanity and the supernatural happenings around him all come into question.
The original game received two story expansions, “The Signal” and “The Writer,” which continued Wake’s story beyond the main game’s events. “Alan Wake Remastered” was released in October 2021 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox with all-new 4K visuals and included both game expansions. During The Game Awards 2021, Remedy announced that the game would be getting a survival horror sequel, which is expected to get a 2023 release.
