Shudder, AMC Network’s premium streaming service for horror, thriller, and the supernatural is only midway through April’s Halfway to Halloween lineup, but it has already announced its lineup for May. Next month brings an all-new series of original and exclusive films and series along with several new additions to Shudder’s growing library of genre films and programming. Here’s what’s coming to Shudder in May:
New Shudder Originals & Exclusives
The Twin – Premieres May 6
In “The Twin,” following the aftermath of a tragic accident that claimed the life of one of their twins,
Rachel (Teresa Palmer, “A Discovery of Witches”) and her husband Anthony (Steven Cree, “A Discovery of Witches”) relocate to the other side of the world with their surviving son in the hopes of building a new life. What begins as a time of healing in the quiet Scandinavian countryside soon takes an ominous turn when Rachel starts to unravel the torturous truth about her son and confronts the malicious forces attempting to take hold of him. “The Twin” will be released in theaters and on-demand the same day.
The Sadness – Premieres May 12
Recently acquired by Shudder following its impressive festival run that began at the prestigious 74th annual Locarno Film Festival and celebrated screenings at the Fantasia International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest, where the film took awards for Best First Feature in Montreal and Best Horror and Best Direction in Austin. “The Sadness” is director Rob Jabbaz’s feature film debut.
Shot in Taipei, Taiwan, where Canadian writer/director Rob Jabbaz now resides, “The Sadness” follows a young couple, played by Regina Lei (“76 Horror Bookstore”) and Berant Zhu (“We Are Champions”), trying to reunite amid a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into deranged, bloodthirsty sadists. Tzu Chiang Wang (“It’s Drizzling”) and In Ru Chen also star.
The Found Footage Phenomenon – Premieres May 19
Directed and produced by Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott, the documentary tracks the origins of the found footage technique and how it transformed with technological changes throughout the last few decades. The Found Footage Phenomenon features interviews with integral found footage directors whose films impacted the horror genre like no other sub-genre has, around the turn of the millennium.
A Banquet – Premieres May 26
Widowed mother Holly is radically tested when her teenage daughter Betsey experiences a profound enlightenment and insists that her body is no longer her own, but in service to a higher power. Bound to her newfound faith, Betsey refuses to eat but loses no weight. In an agonizing dilemma, torn between love and fear, Holly is forced to confront the boundaries of her own beliefs. Starring Sienna Guillory, Jessica Alexander, Ruby Stokes, and Lindsay Duncan. Directed by Ruth Paxton.
