Earlier this week Nintendo announced a number of updates around its upcoming title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Announced during their Nintendo Direct livestream, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that the Castlevania franchise will finally be coming to Super Smash Bros. this December.
The latest installment of the Super Smash Bros. franchise will feature not one, but two Belmonts with both Simon and Richter Belmont joining the game. Legendary vampire hunter Simon Belmont will, of course, battle with his holy whip, but brings with him many of his classic weapons as special attacks including an axe, cross, and holy water. His final smash, called “Grand Cross” will send his opponents to an early grave as they are packed into Dracula’s coffin and launched off the stage.  Richter Belmont, a descendant of Simon Belmont and star of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood comes to the game as an echo fighter based on Simon, though each will have unique voices, animations, and looks.
In addition to new fighters, the inclusion of Castlevania brings with it a new stage as well as new music. The Castlevania stage will be Dracula’s Castle and will be the darkest stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.  The stage will feature candlesticks that can be hit to spawn items as well as a number of monsters from the Castlevania games such as Medusa, Mummy, The Creature & Flea Man, Death, Carmilla and the Werewolf. Dracula will also be making his appearance, though the conditions on which he appears were not revealed. The stage’s music will include 34 new and classic Castlevania tracks to battle to.
The Belmonts are also bringing with them a new assist trophy featuring Alucard, the son of Dracula, who evokes moves similar to those in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, with the ability to turn into a bat and convert to mist form to dodge attacks. Like other assist trophy’s he is susceptible to attack and KO, but is expected to be a very challenging foe.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrives on Nintendo Switch Dec. 7. You can view the full announcement video below.
