Coca-Cola has released a new video across social media that features characters and locations from the show “Stranger Things” promoting “New Coke,” a real Coca-Cola product that was launched in 1985 and then subsequently recalled 79 days later after a public backlash.
The 80’s style commercial was directed by “Stranger Things” creators The Duffer Brothers and is a remake of an actual “New Coke” television spot featuring some of your favorite “Stranger Things” characters enjoying a “New Coke.”
But beyond the co-branded spot, Coke and “Stranger Things” are actually bringing back the product. New Coke will be available beginning Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 5 PM EST, when Coca-Cola will release a limited number of 12-oz cans of New Coke using the exact same recipe from 1985. The cans will be available as part of a bundle when shoppers buy at least two limited-edition “Stranger Things” Coca-Cola or Coke Zero 8-oz glass bottles at CokeStore.com/1985.
Fans can also get their hands on New Coke via an “upside-down” Stranger Things-inspired vending machine that will pop up in select cities, starting May 23 in New York, to dispense free cans of New Coke for a limited time. And fans who buy a ticket or gift at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta on select days during the week of June 3 will have a chance to get New Coke cans as a gift, while supplies last.
Finally, since the New Coke is limited edition and only expected to last a few weeks, Coca-Cola is also releasing limited-edition “Stranger Things” packaging, including a 16-oz. can of Coke featuring the original (pre-New Coke) 1985 design with “Enjoy Coke” and the Stranger Things logo, and a 16-oz. Coke Zero Sugar can with a limited-edition Stranger Things design. Each can will have “sip & scan” icons that will unlock chances to win a variety of “Stranger Things” experiences.
