Yesterday, io9 published an interview with comic book writer Jody Houser. While the focus of the interview was on Houser’s work on DC’s “Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy,” Staff Writer Beth Elderkin kicked off the interview talking briefly about Housers work on her “Stranger Things” spinoff comics “Stranger Things” and “SIX,” in which Houser discussed the creative freedoms she was given with the series, but also unveiled a particular character that was off-limits.
In Houser’s second “Stranger Things” series “SIX,” she introduced us to some of the other kids who were part of Dr. Brenner’s program before Eleven. The story arc revolves around the character Six, but we are also introduced to Three, and identical twins Nine, and Nine and a half.
In January, Dark Horse will release Houser’s follow up to the series titled “Into the Fire,” which will continue to explore the backstories of other kids in Dr. Brenner’s program. It will also mark the return of Eight, who was introduced in “Stranger Things” season two.
However, there is one kid from the program we likely won’t be seeing in the comic books anytime soon. During her io9 interview, Houser shared the only restriction the “Stranger Things” creators have put on her while developing the comic series. “I mean, we’ve been given, actually, more freedom than I expected, honestly,” said Houser. “Especially in terms of creating new characters from the program. Really the one restriction we got was we couldn’t use the number One. Other than that, any other number was up for grabs.”
While Houser herself claims to not know why the character is off-limits, it definitely suggests that One might be a major plot point in an upcoming season of the show. And just to throw it out there, could One be the infamous “American” that was referenced at the end of “Stranger Things 3?” I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
