Every year for the last 18 years a gingerbread house has sat atop the Grand Hall table in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland during the festive Nightmare Before Christmas overlay for Haunted Mansion Holiday. While many may believe this is simply a prop constructed by Imagineers somewhere backstage at Disney, these original works of art are actually constructed using real gingerbread, by pastry chefs. Yesterday, the Disneyland Resort kicked off its Halloween season and while visiting guests will get to see this year’s gingerbread house while riding Haunted Mansion Holiday, Disney provided a behind the scenes look at the house for the world to see.
According to the Disney Parks blog, work began on the gingerbread house over a month ago and was created with the help of upwards of 12 pastry chefs led by Assistant Pastry Chef Christina Orejel. This year’s house was inspired by monster movies and features a giant 5-foot spider tearing the gingerbread house from its foundation and making snacks of nearby gingerbread zombies.
This years creation was made with:
- 90 pounds of gingerbread
- 30 pounds of confectioner’s sugar
- 10 pounds of white chocolate
- 45 pounds of fondant
You can see the finished product below, but be sure to head over to the Disney Parks blog to see how this massive ginger-“dread” vision was brought to life.
