Principal production has begun on a new documentary exploring the films and life of Italian filmmaker Mario Bava.
“Mario Bava: The Godfather of Modern Horror” is being produced by NAOR International, Emmy winner Rex Edit, and Heilman Productions and will feature commentary from today’s leading filmmakers as they take audiences on a cinema odyssey exploring the wildly creative films of this influential, yet often neglected filmmaker. The film is a celebration of the innovation of rebellion of Bava, which influenced a whole generation of filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Francis Ford Coppola, and Quentin Tarantino.
The documentary will reveal the wild successes and quiet struggles of Bava as he navigated an industry of tight budgets and tighter deadlines to create masterworks of film that make your skin crawl. The production will have never-before access to Mr. Alfredo Leone, one of Bava’s executive producers and co-executive producer of the documentary, as well as the Bava family.
“He was that far ahead of his time. Genius,” says Leone of Bava. “But the people really didn’t recognize that then, it was later, that he became the legend.”
Bava is perhaps best known for films like “Black Sunday,” “Blood and Black Lace,” and “Black Sabbath” and is often referred to as the “Master of Italian Horror” and the “Master of the Macabre.”
“Mario Bava: The Godfather of Modern Horror” is slated for release in 2022.
