On Thursday, “Stranger Things” creators the Duffer Brothers took to social media to share an open letter to fans with details on the debut of “Stranger Things 4” and the future of the hit Netflix series.
The highly anticipated fourth season of “Stranger Things” will premiere on May 27, 2022. The season will be a two-part season, with Volume 1 debuting on May 27 and Volume 2 debuting on July 1. “Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon as possible, Season 4 will be released in two volumes,” explained the brothers in their letter. “Stranger Things 4” has a runtime nearly twice the length of any other season and featured nine scripts that were over 800 pages.
When “Stranger Things 4” debuts, it will pick up six months after the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down. “Stranger Things 4” will also be the beginning of the end of this beloved Netflix series.
“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” said the Duffer Brothers in their open letter. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.”
But it doesn’t sound like this is a total goodbye to the world of “Stranger Things.” While season five will end Eleven’s story arc, the brothers go on to say that there are more stories to tell in the show’s universe. Something the series has already been doing through other mediums like comic books, books, and even a scripted podcast.
