Google has released this years Halloween trends feature, Frightgeist, which explores the most popular Halloween costumes of 2018. Pulling from the top 500 costume searches in the U.S., Frightgeist highlights the current top trends nationally, or you can toggle the tool to tell you whats most popular where you live.
Like the Halloween 2018 Pinterest trends I shared earlier this week, this year’s top costumes aren’t that scary. Your top ten costumes at the time of this writing are:
- Fortnite
- Spider-Man
- Unicorn
- Dinosaur
- Witch
- Harley Quinn
- Superhero
- Pirate
- Rabbit
- Princess
Fortnite is dominating not only game consoles in 2018, but also Halloween. According to Google, Fortnite costumes are the most searched costume in 43 of the 50 U.S. states. The only states to deviate from this were Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, and Vermont. These states are planning to be the following:
- Alaska: Mermaid
- Arkansas: Dinosaur
- Idaho: Unicorn
- Oregon: Dinosaur
- South Dakota: Spider-Man
- Utah: Unicorn
- Vermont: Monster
If you dive a little deeper into the list you do see a few familiar faces from the horror world. Your classics like Zombie, Vampire, Skeleton and Ghost all made it into the top 50. More specific characters like Chucky, ranked 26, Nun, which I imagine is being fueled by this years horror film The Nun, and IT AKA Pennywise shows up in the top 100.
Surprisingly, despite a new Halloween film coming out this Halloween season, Michael Myers is nowhere in the top 100 costumes. In fact aside from Chucky and “IT” the only modern horror icon to show up in the top 100 was Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, but just barely at #99.
You can check out Google’s Frightgeist for yourself here. In addition to exploring costume trends nationally and locally, you can leverage Google’s Costume Wizard, which can recommend a costume for you based on your preference of spookiness, style, trendiness, and uniqueness.
