Wednesday was Ghostbusters Day, the annual fan celebration, which takes place on June 8 to celebrate the June 8, 1984, release of the original “Ghostbusters” film. On this special day, not one but two new “Ghostbusters” animated projects were announced.
First, news broke from Variety that a new “Ghostbusters” animated series was in the works at Netflix, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan announced as executive producers. The news was echoed later in the evening when Reitman and Kenan took the stage during Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters Day Ecto-Fest sharing that Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix would be teaming up on the series.
Details were slim, suggesting the series is still in very early development. However, the duo shared that the new series would explore a new era of the “Ghostbusters” canon.
During Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters Day Ecto-Fest, Sony Pictures also announced that “Ghostbusters” would be getting an animated feature film. The new movie will feature all-new characters and be a fresh take on the world of “Ghostbusters.” The animated feature will be helmed by Jennifer Kluska and Chris Prynoski and written by Brenda Hsueh.
“This was a passion project of my father’s,” shared Reitman. “And it’s easy to understand why. The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless reach of animation.”
Like the animated series, no other details were provided, and no timeline for when either of the projects would be released was announced.
The original “Ghostbusters” was helmed by Reitman’s father, Ivan Reitman, and starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, along with Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts.
