Variety has reported that HBO Max, the direct-to-consumer video streaming service launching from WarnerMedia, has ordered pilots for three new projects including a series that will be a prequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic.
The one-hour drama titled “Rules of Magic,” will be based on the novels “Rules of Magic” and “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman.
Set in 1960s New York City, the series follows three troubled siblings — Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens — who wrestle with “abnormalities” that have kept them isolated. But the tumultuous times unearth the extraordinary discovery that they are, in fact, descendants of a bloodline of witches.
Fans of Practical Magic will recognize the names of the two sisters as the aunts played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest in the Practical Magic film.
