When Google’s cloud gaming platform Stadia launched in the fall of 2019, it had one proper launch exclusive: “GYLT.” Set in a creepy and melancholic world, the game mixes action, stealth, and environmental puzzles. The game’s fate was uncertain when Google announced it was shuttering the Stadia platform in January 2023. Thankfully, Tequila Works, the game’s developer, was able to bring “GYLT” to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox in 2023, and now the developer has announced the game’s arrival on the Nintendo Switch.
“GYLT” is an eerie story mixing fantasy and reality that follows Sally, an 11-year-old girl whose little cousin, Emily, has gone missing. While everyone else has stopped searching for Emily, Sally is determined to find her. You start the game posting missing posters around your hometown of Bethelwood before being chased away by a group of bullies. During the chase, you fall into a ditch and, in an attempt to find a way home, wind up in a nightmarish alternate reality where you quickly discover your cousin now resides.
Here, players must find their way through a twisted world where they come face to face with terrible creatures that they must choose to face or hide from and are confronted with the emotional impact of their actions.
I shared my review of “GYLT” back in 2020, and while there is nothing groundbreaking about the title, and it isn’t without its flaws, it was a game I enjoyed playing. I am excited that even more people will now have the opportunity to experience it.
“GYLT” arrives on the Nintendo Switch in digital release on March 14, 2024. Following the initial announcement, Tequila Works has announced they are working with publisher and distributor Tesura Games to release a physical version in both Standard and Collector’s Edition. The physical version of “GYLT” has a tentative release date of May 31, 2024.
The Standard Edition release will include a sticker sheet and reversible cover, while the Collector’s Edition will include:
