Peacock has announced a straight-to-series order of a new series adaptation of the 1989 horror-comedy “The ‘Burbs.” The series will be written by Celeste Hughey (“Palm Royale”) and star Keke Palmer (“Nope”). Both Hughey and Palmer will also executive produce.
The series will be a mystery-comedy set in present-day suburbia and follows a young couple returning to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.
The series will film in Los Angeles at the same location as the original 1989 film, on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.
Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”), Erica Huggins, and Aimee Carlson will executive produce for Fuzzy Door, alongside Brian Grazer (“Empire”), Kristen Zolner, and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment. Dana Olsen, the writer of the 1989 film, will serve as co-executive producer on the series. The series adaptation is the latest project from Fuzzy Door under its overall television deal with UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.
In the original “The Burbs,” Tom Hanks stars as Ray Peterson, an overstressed suburbanite who becomes convinced that his new neighbors are a cult. As he delves deeper into their mysterious activities, he begins to question his own sanity and the normalcy of his own life. The film blends horror, comedy, and satire elements, offering a satirical look at the suburban American lifestyle.
