HBO Max hopes to take fans of the “IT” films back to Derry, Maine, in an all-new prequel series called “Welcome to Derry.” According to Variety, the series would take place in the 1960s — 20 years before the events in the 2017 film “IT” — and explore the origins of fan-favorite Pennywise the Clown and the 27-year curse that haunts the small town.
Andy Muschietti, who adapted Stephen King’s “It” for the 2017 film and its 2019 sequel, is said to be attached to the project as executive producer along with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. The three reportedly developed the story for the series, with Fuchs writing the script.
While no details on whether or not the series has been greenlit or if any of the actors from the “IT” films would reprise their roles in the series, it does appear that a writer’s room has been established for the project. Andy Muschietti seemed to confirm the reports on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of the Variety article with the caption, “Ready to go back?” with a series of red balloon emojis.
