In late August, Scottish synth band Chvrches released their latest album, “Screen Violence,” a darker detour from the band’s more recent releases that the group’s frontwoman, Lauren Mayberry, says was written through the lens of a horror film. With horror themes and film at the heart of the album, it was suggested that the band tap famous composers to reimagine some of the album’s songs, and naturally, horror and synth master John Carpenter came to mind.
“When we were discussing the idea of Screen Violence, somebody suggested that we have composers reimagine some of the songs, and our first instinct was, Oh, well, we should ask John Carpenter,” explained Chvrches’ Martin Doherty in a recent interview with Vulture. The band reached out to Carpenter in hopes of collaborating, and to their surprise, Carpenter obliged. A fan of the third single off “Screen Violence,” “Good Girls,” Carpenter offered to remix the track in exchange for a Chvrches remix of one of his songs. The result, a new split 7-inch on Sacred Bones featuring a Chvrches remix of John Carpenter’s “Turning Bones” and a John Carpenter Remix of Chvrches’ “Good Girls.”
The 7-inch vinyl is available for pre-order now through Sacred Bones and is expected to be released on December 10, 2021. The record is available on blue and pink marble vinyl for $10 and features different art printed on each side of the jacket. You can hear both tracks from the record below:
