Clue, Battleship, Ouija… over the years there hasn’t been a shortage of films being made from games we had as kids, and now Mattel and Blumhouse are teaming up to tackle another: Magic 8 Ball®.
Announced this week, Blumhouse Productions is creating a live-action feature based on the iconic fortune-telling Magic 8 Ball®. The film will be directed by critically-acclaimed director Jeff Wadlow, whose previous work includes notable films such as Kick-Ass 2 and Truth or Dare. Wadlow is writing the script with his collaborators, Jillian Jacobs, and Chris Roach.
The film was described as “suspense-filled” in the announcing press release, with Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner citing Blumhouse’s “unique approach to the thriller genre” as to why the production company was best suited to tell the Magic 8 Ball® story.
Blumhouse, of course, was behind the 2014 film Ouija and its 2016 prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil which of course adapted another mysterious kids’ toy, the Ouija board, into a feature film.
The Magic 8 Ball movie is the sixth project Mattel Films has in development, including plans to create feature films based on Mattel’s Barbie®, Hot Wheels®, Masters of the Universe®, American Girl® and View Master® brands.
