Have you heard of the new diet fad that’s taking Netflix by storm? Â The Santa Clarita Diet, which is due to hit Netflix on February 3 had been kept more-or-less under wraps until recently. Â Starring Drew Barrymore, the series was originally pitched by Netflix as the following:
“In the single-camera series, Joel (Timothy Olyphant, Justified) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore, Blended) are husband and wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction…but in a good way.”
But over the last week or so more details have been released and we’ve learned the new series is actually a horror-comedy.  During Sunday’s 74th Golden Globes Netflix dropped a new ad spot for the series featuring Barrymore in a parody weight loss ad.  Barrymore kicks off the ad saying, “Everyone is asking, how is it that I feel younger, more energetic and sexier than I have in years? It’s the Santa Clarita Diet.” But things take a twist when she states, “I satisfy all my cravings, and eat whoever I want,” and then grabs a hunk of flesh out of a bowl and eats it.
This morning, Netflix released a companion ad to Sunday night’s Barrymore spot, starring Olyphant who talks about how great the diet is but then goes on a tirade about what we can only guess is a telling of one of his wife’s cravings for flesh.
So is Barrymore a zombie, a cannibal, something different altogether? Â That’s still TBD, but the more I learn about this series the more it piques our interest!
