Last year, Netflix announced it was developing “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” a 10-episode prequel to the 1982 film The Dark Crystal. The film went into production last fall, and today Netflix finally revealed the star studded voice cast and shared the first images from the new series, which returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure.

“To match the stunning visual world of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, we knew we had to entice some incredible voice talent to add dimension to the exquisite artistry of the puppeteers who bring the characters to life,” said Cindy Holland, VP of Original Series at Netflix in a released statement. “I am proud to say that this may be one of the finest casts assembled from the world’s favourite TV shows and movies, and I am now even more excited for fans to come back to Thra with us, and for new viewers to discover this world for the very first time.”

Leading the voice cast are Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, as a trio of Gefling heroes Rian, Brea and Deet. Other Geflings in the series will be voiced by Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander.

The Skeksis & Mystics are voiced by: Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs. Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg.

Aughra will be voiced by Donna Kimball. Additional characters will also be voiced by puppeteers from the production, including Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid.

“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” takes place many years before the events of the film and tells the epic story of how The Crystal of Truth is damaged and corrupted by the Skeksis, spreading a sickness across the land of Thra. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.

Like the original film, the series will leverage classic puppetry and cutting edge visual effects and will expand the already rich, vibrant, hand-crafted world created by Jim Henson. Introducing us to the matriarchal Gelfing culture in a time, when the world of Thra was younger and more vibrant.

“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will launch globally on Netflix in 2019
