Earlier this year, it was announced that Netflix was partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a live-action film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise “BioShock.” On Thursday, Netflix announced the movie had found its writer and director.
Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “I Am Legend,” “Slumberland”) is set to direct the live-action adaption of “BioShock” with Michael Green (“Logan,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Death on the Nile”) writing the screenplay. Deadline reports that Green will work on the screenplay as Lawrence wraps up production on the prequel, “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” which is set to premiere in 2023.
Set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the “Bioshock” game franchise blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told – all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharp shooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation. Between “BioShock,” “BioShock 2,” and “BioShock Infinite” and the multiple re-releases, remastered editions, and bundled collections, the series has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, and is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated and beloved series in all of gaming. The next installment is currently in development by Cloud Chamber.
Lawrence will also serve as a producer on the film for about:blank. Roy Lee will produce for Vertigo Entertainment. Executive producers are Cameron MacConomy for about:blank and Strauss Zelnick for Take-Two Interactive.
