Sometimes what you see on the internet winds up being true. Rumors had circulated recently that actress Neve Campbell would not be reprising her role as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming sixth installment of the “Scream” franchise. Today, Deadline shared an official statement from the actress confirming the news.
“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film,” Campbell told Deadline.
Adding, “As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
Campbell concluded by saying, “It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
Neve Campbell first took on the role of Sidney Prescott in 1996’s “Scream” and has appeared in all four of the franchise sequels. Joining Campbell for the ride were co-stars David Arquette as Dewey Riley and Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, both of which appeared in all five films in the franchise. Following the death of Arquette’s character in this year’s “Scream,” it’s unlikely he would be making a return in “Scream 6.” Courtney Cox, however, recently told Variety that she would be returning for the sixth installment in the franchise.
Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega, who made their debut in this year’s “Scream” as the latest batch of Woodsboro survivors, are also set to return for “Scream 6” along with Hayden Panettiere, who will reprise her role as “Scream 4” favorite Kirby.
“Scream 6” is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 31, 2023, and will focus predominantly on the four survivors of the latest film after they leave Woodsboro and try and move on with their lives.
