‘Nightmare Busters’—30 Years Later, Cancelled Super Nintendo Title Getting Physical Release

A Super Nintendo title slated to hit the console in 1995 but was then cancelled is finally going to be released, thanks to Pix’n Love Games and Aurora Game Studio.

Initially conceived in the ’90s by Christophe Gayraud and Jean-Christophe Alessandri, “Nightmare Busters” had all the ingredients to become a 16-bit run-and-gun favorite on the Super Nintendo, complete with gigantic sprites, intense action, and beautiful 2D visuals. However, after months of development and a planned release in 1995, the game was sadly canceled. Now, 30 years later, the game is being resurrected in the form of a brand-new cartridge for the SNES.

“Nightmare Busters” follows twin leprechauns Flynn and Floyd in their journey to stop the Tyrant, a diabolical villain who has discovered a way to enter the dreams of young children and turn them into nightmares. Armed with razor-sharp playing cards, the brothers must fight goblins and ghouls in an effort to restore peace to the night.

The upcoming release, “Nightmare Busters Rebirth,” reimagines the original title with contemporary graphics and dynamic gameplay, with completely revamped graphics and animations that honor the original game’s spirit. The game will also support local co-op.

The game is being released in three versions: American, European, and Japanese. Each with characteristics specific to the region—specific boxes, game manuals, and cartridge formats – a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of 16-bit gaming!

The SNES release is tightly linked to the “Nightmare Busters Rebirth” project in development for Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. The “Nightmare Busters” SNES release will be an Ultimate Edition as part of an upcoming Kickstarter campaign.
