Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger in the first six A Nightmare On Elm Street movies as well as Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and Freddy vs Jason shared a unique idea for a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie while speaking at the 2018 Summer Television Critics Association press tour on a panel for upcoming AMC documentary series Eli Roth’s History of Horror.
During the panel, Englund suggested a film where Freddy isn’t a single character, but instead one who changes based on the dreamer’s imagination. “If I had an Eli Roth budget I would have cast different actors to play Freddy for every potential victim,” Englund said. “Because Freddy is only alive in the imagination of his future victim. They would talk about it at a slumber party or in a locker room at school, or on the bus going home. All we know about this Fred Krueger is he wears a hat, wears a red and green striped sweater and has a clawed hand. That’s the specifics.”
Based on the limited information available about Krueger the specifics could vary by victim. “So it could be a red and green cardigan for one Freddy,” he said. “It could be an old tattered baseball cap for another Freddy. Freddy could be tall, he could be short, he could be overweight, he could be muscular. Every one of the victims could have a different Freddy they imagined. And you could haunt them with that Freddy.”
Of course, the flaw of this concept is that Fred Krueger was a real person, which means he had a physical look and presence in the real world. If he were only in your nightmares this would fly, but based on the lore of Freddy Krueger teens wanting to know more about the killer could easily look him up online and see what he looked like.
