This week, Scream Factory announced three new physical media releases, all of which are arriving in March and all of which happen to be remakes. The three films getting new releases are Mick Garris’ take on Stephen King’s “The Shining,” 2019’s remake of “Child’s Play,” and the 2013 remake of “Carrie.”
The Shining (1997)
On March 12, Scream Factory will release the 1997 three-episode television miniseries “The Shining” on Blu-ray. “The Shining” will be a two-disc release; however, special features and extras have not yet been announced.
“The Shining” stars Steven Weber as Jack Torrance and tells the story of when he and his family (Rebecca De Mornay and Courtland Mead) move into the sprawling, vacant Overlook Hotel to get away from it all. Away from the alcoholism that derails Jack’s writing career. Away from the violent outbursts that mar Jack’s past. But Jack’s young son Danny knows better. He possesses a psychic gift called the shining — a gift the hotel’s vile spirits desperately want. The series was scripted by Stephen King from his own novel and directed by frequent King adaptor Mick Garris (“Sleepwalkers,” “The Stand”).
“The Shining” Blu-ray is available for pre-order now.
Child’s Play (2019)
On March 19, the 2019 re-imagining of the 1988 horror classic “Child’s Play” is getting a Collector’s Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo pack. This two-disc Collector’s Edition will feature a limited edition slipcover with first pressing, and if you pre-order from ShoutFactory.com, you can get an exclusive 18″ x 24″ rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork while supplies last. Final extras and specs for this release will be announced at a later date.
From the producers of “IT,” this take on “Child’s Play” brings the killer doll into the modern age with an AI-enhanced version of Chucky. Aubrey Plaza (“The White Lotus”) stars as Karen, a mother who buys a seemingly innocent Chucky doll for her lonely son Andy (Gabriel Bateman, “The Fabelmans”). Unbenounced to her or her son, the doll’s safety features have been turned off, and soon, a gruesome series of events unfolds. Unable to convince his mom that the doll is responsible for the carnage, Andy becomes the target of the bloodthirsty Chucky!
Carrie (2013)
Also arriving on Collector’s Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray on March 19 is the 2013 remake of “Carrie” starring Chloë Grace Moretz as the telekinetic teen Carrie. This two-disc release is available for pre-order now from ShoutFactory.com and comes with an exclusive 18″ x 24″ rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork while supplies last. Extras for the release are currently in the works and will be announced at a later date.
After merciless taunting from classmates and abuse at the hand of her religious fanatic mother (Julianne Moore), Carrie lets her anger get the best of her … and her telekinetic powers are unleashed. And when a prom prank goes horribly wrong, events spiral out of control until the terrifying conclusion of this retelling of the 1976 horror classic.
