Thanks to the success of the CW TV series Riverdale, Sabrina Spellman, Riverdale’s resident teen witch, is getting a show of her own. According to Deadline, the show, which was originally being developed as The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for the CW has now been picked up as an unnamed 20-episode, two-season, straight-to-series order at Netflix.
Unlike the 90’s sitcom Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart, the new Sabrina series will have a much darker tone. The new series will be a one hour drama based on the Archie Horror comics The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and will tell the coming-of-age story of Sabrina and her struggle with being a witch while fighting the forces of evil that threaten her and the people around her. The series pilot will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the author of the comics and directed by Lee Toland Krieger. The two previously worked together on the pilot for the CW series Riverdale.
Deadline points out one downside to the Netflix announcement is that it would prevent any crossover opportunities between the CW’s Riverdale and the new Sabrina series. Crossovers and spinoffs are one of the things the CW has been fairly successful with over the years capitalizing on shows like The Vampire Diaries, it’s DC comics properties, and soon Supernatural.
