Shudder is Bringing Festival Favorite ‘One Cut of the Dead’ to Theaters Ahead of its Shudder Debut

One Cut of the Dead still

Shudder, in association with theatrical partner Variance Films, is bringing festival favorite One Cut of the Dead to the big screen, prior to its debut on Shudder.

One of the most critically-acclaimed genre films of the past decade and a record-shattering blockbuster in its native Japan, One Cut of the Dead is the brainchild of writer-director Shinchiro Ued and tells the story of a director and film crew behind a low-budget zombie film. While filming in an abandoned water filtration plant, the film’s director argues with the films cast before eventually abandoning them. As the cast and crew await the directors’ return, a real zombie apocalypse begins and the cameras are still rolling.

After a 37-minute single take, the film flashes back to one month earlier, where it is revealed that the film’s director was approached by a zombie channel to create a TV episode of a zombie attack, using only one camera, without any stoppages – to be broadcast live. The film then goes on to reveal all the problems that arose during the live filming, hilariously re-examining the initial single-take film and all the madness, mistakes, and ingenuity that were involved in successfully pulling it off. The end result is one of the wildest, funniest, and most surprising zombie movies of all time.

The film will open in New York City at the IFC Center and in Los Angeles at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown on September 13, 2019 before being released for one-night screenings at over 60 locations across the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday, September 17, with additional screenings to follow.
