Six Flags Magic Mountain announced its lineup of new and returning mazes and scare zones coming to the all-new Fright Fest Extreme this Halloween season. The news was announced during the Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest panel on Saturday during Midsummer Scream.
The panel was moderated by Six Flags Magic Mountain Manager of Entertainment & Events, Michael Ostrom, who was joined by RWS Executive Producer for Six Flag Fright Fest Extreme Allison Fox, RWS Executive Vice President of Production Danielle Kramer, and Six Flags Chief Marketing Officer Edithann Ramey. During the panel, the group took a deeper dive into the news around the recently announced Six Flags Fright Fest Extreme, which brings the most extensive lineup of mazes and scare zones to Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest to date.
While the news of the expanded event touches all Six Flags parks across the U.S., during the panel, Ramey confirmed that California’s expansion will be one of the biggest. “Right now, California and New Jersey, which are two of our biggest Six Flags parks, are going to do it big,” said Ramey. “They’re going to be huge. You’ve gotta go there first. The whole park is going to be extreme.”
And extreme it is. This year’s Fright Fest will feature 11 mazes and eight scare zones throughout the park. At Six Flags Magic Mountain, guests will get to experience mazes inspired by several new IPs, including “Stranger Things,” “Army of the Dead,” “The Conjuring,”” Universe, “SAW,” and “Trick ‘r Treat.”
It was revealed that Six Flags and RWS want to tell stories that fans haven’t seen before for the new IPs. “You’ve seen these IPs before,” said Fox. But the angle that we’re approaching them from is to make sure we’re showing you your favorite parts of the story, but also the parts of the story that you haven’t seen play out live yet. That’s what makes them extreme.”
The group was tight-lipped about specifics for each of the new mazes; however, it was revealed that “The Conjuring” Universe maze will leverage elements from all nine films, including the Annabelle and The Nun films.
When talking about the “Trick ‘r Treat” maze, the group was joined by “Trick ‘r Treat” writer and director Mike Dougherty, who has been working closely with the theme parks to create the new maze. During the panel, it was revealed that the maze will not follow the linear story from the film but will instead borrow from what Kramer called the “Trick ‘r Treat-verse,” leveraging the graphic novels and comic books that have been released to expand the lore of the “Trick ‘r Treat” film.
The new IPs will be joined by the all-new original maze, Aftermath: Nocturnal Hunt, and returning favorites Willoughby’s Resurrected, Condemned, Truth or Dare, Vault 666 Unlocked, and Sewer of Souls.
During the panel, the group also detailed this year’s scare zones, which include legacy scare zones City Under Siege, Carnivhell, Devil’s Triangle, Exile Hill, and The Dead Zone, along with three new scare zones: the “Wizard of Oz” themed Under Worlds of OZ, the DÃa de los Muertos themed Plaza del la Muerte, and Grimmlore Ridge.
At Six Flags Magic Mountain, Fright Fest Extreme will operate on select Thursdays through Sundays from September 7 to November 3. It will be the park’s largest and longest Fright Fest ever, with 32 nights of fright. Tickets for Six Flags Fright Fest Extreme are available now at sixflags.com/frightfest.
