The Director’s Cut of ‘Midsommar’ is Coming to IMAX on the Actual Summer Solstice

Earlier this year, A24 and IMAX teamed up for a monthly screening series to showcase some of A24’s most iconic films, never-before-seen in IMAX. This week, A24 and Imax unveiled the next three films in the series, which include a director’s cut of Ari Aster’s 2019 folk horror, “Midsommar.”

The film stars Florence Pugh as Dani, who is stricken with immense grief after a horrific family tragedy. To cope, she takes a trip to Sweden with her boyfriend and his friends to attend a midsummer festival at a rural commune. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

The director’s cut of “Midsommar” adds an extra 23 minutes to the film’s runtime, bumping it up to 171 minutes. The added runtime gives more context to Dani’s relationship with her boyfriend and expands on some of the rituals of the Swedish cult. For folks who haven’t seen the film, these changes likely won’t have any impact, but for those who have seen the theatrical release, you’ll definitely get some added context.

Conveniently, “Midsommar” is headed to IMAX on June 20, 2024, which also happens to be this year’s summer solstice. A single showing of the film will be held at 7 PM local time.

Tickets for this special director’s cut screening are available now through IMAX.com.
