While we have to wait until the fall to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the official Ghostbusters Twitter account announced this week the return of two past Ghostbusters favorites, “The Real Ghostbusters” and “Extreme Ghostbusters.”
The original animated cartoons will be made available for free on YouTube starting this Saturday, February 6, when the first episode of “The Real Ghostbusters” premieres on the Ghostbusters YouTube channel. Then, on Wednesday, February 10, the channel will premiere an episode of the 1997 animated series “Extreme Ghostbusters,” with new episodes being made available weekly.
“The Real Ghostbusters” ran for 140 episodes from 1986 to 1991 on ABC. The series was a spinoff of the 1984 Ghostbusters film and followed the Ghostbusters’ ongoing adventures as they hunt down the supernatural in New York City.
“Extreme Ghostbusters” premiered in syndication in 1997 and ran for a single 40 episode season. Set years after the events of “The Real Ghostbusters,” the series finds the Ghostbusters disbanded due to a lack of supernatural activity. When ghosts begin to reappear in the city, Dr. Egon Spengler recruits a new generation of Ghostbusters from the paranormal class he teaches at a local college.
Don’t want to wait for the YouTube premieres to watch these classic Ghostbusters cartoons? All 10 seasons of “The Real Ghostbusters” are available to purchase and stream on Amazon. The single-season of “Extreme Ghostbusters” is currently available to stream on Hulu.
