Trailer Arrives for New Documentary Series Exploring the Real-Life Events That Inspired ‘The Amityville Horror’

MGM+ has released the official trailer for a new documentary exploring the real-life events that inspired the iconic horror film, “The Amityville Horror.”

The series, titled “Amityville: An Origin Story,” will feature firsthand accounts from witnesses, family members, and former investigators appearing on-camera for the first time to discuss the infamous DeFeo murders, where 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his parents and his younger siblings in the family home in Amityville, New York as they slept in their beds. The series uses exclusive archival footage, newly unearthed images, and stunning original photography woven into the most compelling and comprehensive telling of the Amityville story yet. The series will take viewers on a heart-pounding roller coaster ride through the mythology, factual record, and devastating human toll of this real-life horror turned Hollywood film franchise.

While “The Amityville Horror” doesn’t focus on the murders, it does take inspiration from the events that followed. A year after the murders, a new family moved into the home and reported unusual occurrences, including voices and physical assaults from an unseen force. The family sought the aid of a priest as well as famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, but no outsiders ever experienced anything unusual. These events inspired the 1979 “The Amityville Horror” film.

“Amityville: An Origin Story” will premiere exclusively on MGM+ on April 23, 2023.
