NBCUniversal television announced this week its slate of new films and series across its portfolio of networks, which includes SYFY. Among the four new scripted pickups for the network, the most interesting announcement was a new “Bring It On” film that’s getting a horror twist.
The all-new original movie with the working title, “Bring It On: Halloween,” is set to premiere sometime in 2022. The film is being developed in partnership with Universal 1440 Entertainment and tells the story of an embattled cheerleading squad held down by restrictive rules that seeks the freedom of a creepy, closed school gym to practice for regionals, but when members of the squad start to disappear, the cheerleaders must unmask their assailant to save themselves.
Other SYFY titles announced this week include “Day of the Dead,” “Astrid & Lilly Save the World,” and the slasher film reboot “Slumber Party Massacre.”
“Day of the Dead,” tells the intense story of six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion. This ode to George A. Romero’s famous flesh-eaters reminds us that sometimes all it takes to bring people together is a horde of hungry zombies trying to rip them apart. The series is scheduled to premiere this fall.
“Astrid & Lilly Save the World,” tells the story of outcast high school BFFs Astrid & Lilly, who accidentally crack open a portal to a terrifying monster dimension and must now figure out how to save the world while also surviving high school. The film is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2022.
“Slumber Party Massacre” will premiere in time for Halloween 2021 and is a contemporary twist-filled reimagining of the 1982 cult classic. The film is being produced in partnership with Shout! Studios and is being directed by Danishka Esterhazy, who helmed SYFY’s 2019 surprise horror “The Banana Splits Movie.”
