Today, Universal Pictures dropped the first official trailer for Nia DaCosta’s contemporary reimagining of Candyman.
Produced and co-written by Jordan Peele, the film returns to Chicago’s Cabrini Green, the housing project at the heart of the original 1992 film and the origin of the Candyman lore. A fading memory, the area is now home to a gentrified neighborhood of luxury condos. When artist Anthony McCoy, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Us) moves in nearby he learns of the Candyman urban legend and hopes to keep the legend alive through is art. But by the looks of the trailer, it appears the artist’s effort doesn’t necessarily keep the legend alive so much as give the legend new life.
Candyman hits theatres on June 12.
