‘Y2K’: New A24 Horror-Comedy Makes the Fears of the Y2K Bug a Reality

For anyone who lived it, the year 2000 problem, or Y2K as it is now more commonly known, was a real source of anxiety and uncertainty heading into the year 2000. The Y2K scare, caused by concerns that computers couldn’t handle calendar data for dates in and after the year 2000, led many to believe the issue would result in the failure of critical infrastructure, leading to a global catastrophe. While some minor disruptions occurred, extensive preparations and updates to computer systems helped prevent any significant problems, and the impending armageddon caused by Y2K never came to be. However, a new movie from SNL alum Kyle Mooney explores what might have been if the predictions had come true.

A24 debuted the trailer for the film, “Y2K,” which Mooney both wrote and directed. The film stars Rachel Zegler (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”), Jaeden Martell (“IT”), Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”), and 90s icon Alicia Silverstone. Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit fame also appears in the film as himself, with the late 90s and early 2000s nu-metal star also appearing briefly in the trailer.

The film takes place on the last night of 1999 when two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party and themselves fighting for their lives when midnight strikes.

Being coined a “dial-up disaster comedy,” “Y2K” will arrive in theatres on December 6, 2024. Check out the official trailer below:
