If you missed out on grabbing a bag of Zombie Skittles last Halloween season (I still have a bag sitting here on my desk), it looks like you’re in luck. The Halloween “treat” (not sure if that’s the right word here) will be making its return for 2020.
The candy’s return was shared in an AdAge article talking about how Mars Wrigley is navigating the 2020 Halloween season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. While earlier this week, we saw that Hershey’s is doubling down on Halloween with four new monster-themed candies, Mars Wrigley is being a bit more conservative in their effort. For 2020 the candy maker is bringing back Zombie Skittles, but beyond that, the most you will see is Halloween packaging for products like M&Ms.
As COVID-19 continues to ravage the U.S., plans for Halloween seem to be evolving monthly. “Halloween will still happen, but it may look significantly different,” said Mars Wrigley Chief Halloween Officer (what an awesome job title!) in the article. While he shared he is “very optimistic” that there will be trick-or-treating as well as trunk-or-treating this year, he noted that it likely wouldn’t be happening in every city and state. As such, the company plans to launch a virtual Halloween hub with online trick-or-treating, games, as well as a means of purchasing their Halloween candy online.
While the return of Zombie Skittles is exciting news, seeing the candy industry, which is a vital part of the Halloween season, playing it so conservatively kind of makes you nervous about how 2020 Halloween season is going to look.
